Of the few documents the MHS holds specifically relating to the early history of Guilford, one is a copy of the original Guilford Covenant. While it was likely created around the same time as the original (1639), we consider what we hold to be a contemporary copy and not the original covenant. This document was written about on the town website and in the Hartford Courant in 2014. The former of the two includes a transcription and the names of all signers.
According to an item-level index we have in the library at the MHS, there are a few other documents relating to Guilford's earliest years. They are:
- 29 Sep. 1639?, Memorandum of the Indians who are to “sit down” at Kuttawoo (East River) and of mutual pledge of the Indians and English to maintain “friendship and faithfulness.” [Available digitally on our website here.]
- 29 Sep. 1639, Henry Whitfield’s agreement on behalf of the English planters at Menunchetuck, with the sachem squaw and the Indian inhabitants of that place for purchase of the land. (Copy) [Available digitally on our website here.]
